Life changing experience - and the best guide anyone could ask for - Rudi was beyond amazing!

This tour should NOT BE MISSED - can’t say anything bad about it and can’t say enough good things about it either! WOW!

We had a fun informative day on this tour with guide Rudi.

He is passionate and informed about the area, the country, and we had a wonderful time exploring beach and dunes. The tide was just right. And there were lots of flamingos.

We chose the whole day tour but half a day would have been fine.

It helps if you enjoy driving up & down the dunes, as that's a significant part of the trip.

Loved the tour. Bruno is a deeply experienced guide / tracker and dune driver who is happy to share his extensive knowledge of any aspect of Namibia.

And he produced an excellent lunch too - homemade lasagne and apple cake.

We would highly recommend this tour.

… Walvis Bay Lagoon was awash with flamingos and we spent some time watching them before driving on towards Sandwich Harbour. Our guide needed time to allow the tide to go out which would allow safe access to Sandwich Harbour so we were able to stop a lot to take pictures of the salt evaporation pans and all the birds (pelicans, spoonbills...) we found along the way. We also stopped to look at some interesting beaches with pink sand and our guide (Rudi) was able to explain everything.

Eventually Rudi thought it was safe to get through and we continued on. We could see where the dunes came down to the sea leaving a small strip of safe, hard sand to drive on. Using a professional team such as the one Expert Africa booked for us is essential for this. We witnessed a nasty accident just ahead of us where a driver from another company had misjudged it. There were several cars around but no-one had a mobile signal to call for help. Rudi was the only one who had a Sat Phone and so was able to summon help and an ambulance. As we had helped the occupants of the vehicle out of their car, we lost an hour and a half while we waited for help for them but as soon as it arrived we were able to make our way through easily. Rudi drove us up into the dunes overlooking the harbour, dropped us off to come down by ourselves and drove down to set up lunch on the beach.

The views from the top were amazing and it was fun running down the dune. Lunch was lovely with a warm lasagne, cake and fruit. It was disappointing there were only a few birds in the lagoon but at a different time of year it must be a wonderful sight.

After lunch Rudi drove us back through the dunes, up and down, which was exhilarating before taking us all home again. It was a good day and we can recommend it.

What an experience!!!!! We were in Rudi’s safe hands!

We were driven down the skeleton coast from Swakopmund. Spectacular views , unforgettable experience. Rudi gave us plenty of interesting information about the birds, animals , dunes the sea. So knowledgeable and the love for the wild life so strong in his veins. We had a beautiful lunch and gave us plenty of time to absorb the beautiful landscape. On the way back Rudi drove us over the dunes…. It was so exciting but we felt safe with him behind the wheel.

This tour is an unforgettable experience.

Big thanks to our guide: he timed the whole day from start to finish!

Thank you

Turnstone Tours excursion to Sandwich harbour with Rudi: returned to Walvis Bay to find that with a guide it has much more to recommend it than previously thought (flamingos on the lagoon, nice housing, lots of information about the running of the salt field)

Drove along the beach to Sandwich Harbour - stunning to see the dunes from the other side and to see them meet the sea. Shared the trip with another German couple & climbed the dunes before having superb lunch on the beach (homemade lasagne & salad with dressing followed by homemade apple pie - bravo to Paulina for her cooking).

Wildlife highlights were seeing 2 ostrich parents and their babies in the dunes, plus seals and dolphins in the sea. Lots of birds spotted. Rudi was straightforward & fun with a great sense of humour… Really fun day, definitely a favourite trip.

This is a wonderful tour, which introduced me to places (and people) I would not have encountered otherwise. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and very good company for the day, as were my travel companions. I learned a lot about the history, geology, flora and fauna of the areas we visited. It was fascinating and I would recommend it to anyone visiting this part of the Namibian coast.

This was probably the highlight of our trip. We were lucky that the weather was perfect and the waves were not an issue. Everything was perfect on the tour : where they take you ( breathtaking ) , the picnic under the dunes ( great food) , the rollercoaster on the dunes felt very safe .

Our driver/ guide was knowledgeable about everything. We had great conversations on the way about Southern Africa politics, Namibia history , photography, wildlife encounters ( dune lark!) the fabulous work he is doing in his private reserve Mundulea… so much so that we want to go and visit his reserve on our next trip to Namibia .

A super, terrific, awesome day. I expected a great trip and it exceeded expectations.

The rich birdlife at the coast and the roller coaster route back through the Namib dunes were fantastic.

Views were amazing! Such an incredible immersive experience. It helped that we had an unusually clear, blue-sky day, all day, and our guide--Rudi--was fantastic. He knows and clearly loves the Namib Desert world and everything in it. Fun trip!

Dear Turnstone Tour Company,

First, we wanted to give a big thank you to our guide. Our trip to Namibia would have been half as interesting without the day spent with you at Sandwich Harbour. The sites of the dunes meeting the sea were breathtaking and having the time to see them from up on the dune was special. Even more than the sites, we enjoyed learning from you about all aspects of Namibian society from political economy to environmental conservation.

Second, I’d like to thank Monika for communicating with us about the water bottle and ensuring that it was safely given to the shuttle company so we were able to pick it up in Windhoek before leaving for the airport.

Many thanks to the whole team for making our trip to Namibia so memorable. We’ll be recommending the sandwich harbour tour with you to our friends and family.

All the best,
Virginia & Drew

Just wanted to thank you again for the fabulous recommendation! The dune tour (today) was quite memorable, not least because there was a pod of bottle-nosed dolphins that came in to feed on the small fish right in the shallow waters in Sandwich Harbour just as we were sliding down from the top of the dunes! They gave us quite a display just as we had stopped for our lunch. Our guide (Rudi) said he had only ever seen that once before so we felt very lucky! As well as all the other wildlife and birds....

Best wishes,

Our favourite parts were hunting for geckos and following shovel nosed skinks trying to take videos. Once again a very interesting environment with a surprising amount of life. I wonder if this tour could include visiting the welwitschias (because) the Welwitschia Drive is very long on a very bad road and very time consuming on its own.

A party of Expert Africa's travellers recently visited Mundulea Reserve - Prof. TL x 2 They arrived on: 18-Oct-2022
They left on: 21-Oct-2022

They wrote to us about their stay, saying:

“Did you see the leopard passing the road?” asks our guide and owner B. We are on our first walking safari short time after arriving in Mundulea Camp. Previously, on the way to the camp, I just reassured my wife “no visitors have ever seen cats [leopard, loon and cheetah] in this area, it should be quite safe. Fortunately, the second argument I gave for undertaking this adventure still holds “They cannot run a business if tourists are eaten all the time”. After our new leopard information, we keep a tighter formation walking one by one in the dense bush and no one really wanted to be the last person in the row?

We are in Mundulea Private Reserve together with our host the owner and expert guide B. He established this 120 km2 large reserve some 20 yrs ago in 2001. It borders Otavi Mountains. When we look around, we see bush and mountain savannah with dolomite ridges spanning the landscape. We are in the central area of Namibia receiving most rainfall at approx. 300 ml / year. The water can’t escape but forms sink holes, steep gorges and underground caverns, when it disappears into the ground. Near a big fig tree, Bruno points out depressions and crevasses in the ground caused by water erosion.

We walk for about 2-3 hours, and the colors get increasingly more impressive; khaki, brown, orange, and sand as the sun disappears behind the mountain peak to the west of us. Just before we reach the camp again 3 hours later, we see a very large eland bull, the alpha animal marking his territory. An impressive sight. Also, his heard drinking from the waterhole just outside the camp. Finally, back in the camp after the first of what turns out to be a row of wonderful walking safaris, we settle around the fireplace with G&T´s. Animal sounds 360 degrees around us. Enchanting.

Our camp has the outline of a “kraal”; a fence of wooden sticks provide some protection against predators during night. We have a simple – bur fully adequate – tent with mosquito nets and an open bathroom. We check the floor for snakes and scorpions, whenever we step out of your bed or enters the open heaven bathroom. We place our shoes on hangers under the roof and keep our bags on tables zipped up all time. Nevertheless, we fell safe in this small paradise. Or as B. expressed it “Don´t mind all the sounds during the night, you are safe in your tent”. Later we learned that Bruno always sleeps outside his tent on the veranda.

B. and his assistant prepare all meals over open fire. We enjoy them on beautiful homemade DIY wooden tables and chairs, placed under a green canvas roof in the shade of a big tree.

We do two daily walks and realize B. is an extraordinary source of nature information. He literally knows all about plants, animals, insects, minerals, landscaping etc. He is involved in multiple research projects and nature activities and researchers join him from all over the world. We – the tourists – are just a way to produce income for the conservation project.

We walk around for up to 5 hours for each trip. Any animal, bird, track tree, scrub, and B. will know the name and all information behind. E.g., he gave us a 20 mins lecture on termites. And yes, it was interesting from beginning to end. Herbivore, carnivore or omnivore? Droppings: Dung or cast?

In the hours in the camp between walking, we had the most interesting conversations with B. and the four other guests around the fire and dining table. A highlight of our trip so far – actually - of all our many trips to Africa, among others five to Namibia.

Leon did comment that he doesn't understand why people stay in Swakopmund instead of Walvis Bay, considering they have to drive 45 minutes to/from the north to go back south for Sandwich Harbor and Walvis Bay activities. We wondered the same thing, but assume maybe it is because there are not suitable lodgings/restaurants in Walvis Bay for a 2-night stay?

I hope you are both well and enjoyed a good season at Mundulea this year. I have been meaning for some time to write to you and thank you for looking after Brian and Lynne so well. They absolutely raved about their tour and are seeking to do another one in 2024, if it can work. They absolutely loved travelling with Bruno and learnt so much. An unforgettable experience very well introduced and described by Expert Africa. Bruno runs a quite unique operation which whilst not quite his life’s work felt like it could be. The two of us roamed far and wide on his reserve and his expert knowledge was shared in the right dosage throughout. Beyond the basic experience and introduction to the rewilding project, he is a fascinating and engaging character on subjects personal and general, just as well given the intimate and intense nature of the stay here. I imagine even very experienced travellers to Africa would acknowledge this to be “something different”.

The ratings below need to be read in context. There are no communications, no swimming pool, rooms are all you need but no more and the food exceeded what you could expect a bush camp. We were delighted with all but I am applying the same scale as for a regular high end lodge.

We've been back in the States for a bit but gotta tell you we fell in love with Namibia. We loved the north with the animals but the south was the most special to me. The feeling of freedom was incredible.

We also really enjoyed our tour with Bruno to Sandwich Bay. We had a mix of fog and clear which was perfect for photography. I also learned a bit about sand driving which aided me for the next two weeks.

Anyway attached are a couple of shots that you and Bruno might enjoy or have use of - I enjoy taking pictures "of" the safari - the process as well as the everything else…

Sandwich Harbour Day Tour & Mundulea Bush Camp and Walking Trails

Morning Kate,

... I just wanted to pass on thanks and let you know that the Wilsons’ trip to Sandwich Harbour and their stay at Mundulea were stand out experiences on their trip - they just loved both and really enjoyed Bruno and Rudi’s company.

I just wanted to follow up on one observation Keith made about charging facilities at Mundulea to that I can make sure our information is up to date. Please can you let me know what, if any, charging facilities there are?

Thanks again to everyone for their help in making their stay so successful!

Best wishes
Mary

(Reply from Bruno: In keeping with our minimal eco-footprint policy, the Bush Camp at Mundulea does not have electricity other than what’s necessary for our low-voltage bedside lamps and the fridges in the camp kitchen. This is drawn from stored solar power generated by a couple of solar panels at the camp. There’s also no cell phone reception or wifi, so people are generally happy (relieved?) to pack away their phones for the three nights of their stay (unless they don’t have a real camera). If guests do need to recharge a battery, I can plug it in for a while at the 12 v USB charger in the kitchen which is there to keep my sat-phone charged in case it’s needed. This can be done while we are out walking, or resting over lunchtime for example, but it’s limited to 12 volts, a USB-type connection, and means leaving your phone in the kitchen (where of course it will be perfectly safe and untouched). It’s a good idea to make sure that batteries are fully charged before arriving at the bush camp – and if they are used to an extent requiring recharge, that will be possible, but not in their rooms)

Staying at Mundulea was both a very enjoyable and enriching experience, enabling us to immerse ourselves within a truly remarkable regeneration project.

It is a rustic, ecologically sound and minimum impact camp that brings you up close to nature, a counter point to the other camps and lodges we had experienced. No safari drives, just walks , but not without its creature comforts at the end of the day such as hot showers, flushing loos and hot water bottles.

Our host, Bruno Nebe, owner, an exceptional guide and first class cook, is a mine of information and intriguing anecdotes drawn from across a wide range of subjects. Great conversationalist.

Dear Kate,

Our clients Mr and Mrs I were overwhelmed and more than happy with their stay with Bruno and left a review of their stay.

It is in German, so I won’t translate it for you to have the original wording. I am sure Bruno can assist with a translation 😉

Mundulea: absolutes Highlight.

Thank you so much for offering this great experience to my clients!

Kind regards / Mit den besten Grüßen,
Ursula Moths

Dear Kate and Bruno,

Well we are now safely back home after a wonderful trip to Namibia one of the highlights of which was our three nights at Mundulea. We extricated ourselves back to the tar, Brno may well have seen evidence of our passing when submerged ‘tracks’ wanted our truck to go where I did not wish to. Following my old boat training I knew that when aground the easiest route to floating is to go out the way you came in. And so applied to 4x4s it worked just the same which was a relief as that mud looked very sticky and deep…

We loved Mundulea as it really exceeded our expectations and must get back there when we can… Such a lovely quiet setting and next time I see myself sitting in a camp chair at the foot of those rocks waiting patiently for better views of those Rockjumpers. My night camera gave lots of views of Giraffe so they are doing well and loved the block of salt that you put out.

Thanks once more for all your patience and understanding during the booking process and it was a pity that we never got to meet you too.

Best thanks and warm wishes,

Fred and Elizabeth.

Hello Bruno,

I would like to thank you for the two tours to Sandwich Bay you gave for my two photography tour groups. Participants of both groups were very happy with the chance to see the wildlife along the sea, the sand dunes along the shore, Sandwich Bay and the overnight camping in the Kuiseb area. However, I believe that I got the better deal by experiencing it twice. Each trip was very unique in itself!

Cheers,
Peter

They wrote to us about their stay, saying:

Let's start with a paradox - the priority at Mundulea is absolutely not the comfort or interests of its visitors; this is what makes it such a wonderful place to stay. I don't mean by that that it's uncomfortable or uninteresting (it's definitely neither) but that if there's ever a conflict between the interests of the environment and the interests of the tourist, the environment wins every time. If you come here expecting or needing conventional "service", or if your priority from a wildlife experience is taking photos of big game with a big lens, you will find Mundulea is not for you - and think very seriously before including it in your itinerary. If what you want to do is learn about the bush, about Africa, and come away with a renewed respect for the wild and our place in it, you'll find Mundulea a thoroughly rewarding experience.

Mundulea is the vision and passion of Bruno Nebe, a project that he has invested his life in in more ways than one. He's aiming to bring what was cattle farming land - over grazed and denuded of most of its wildlife - back to its original state. He's a pioneer, who has spent the last 20 years working out how this can be done - with a bit of trial and error. He's had a quite astonishing life - you'll have to go there to get his stories, I couldn't do them justice - which you'll gradually learn about in your time at Mundulea, as you walk through the bush, drink a much-needed beer by the fire or enjoy the food. This is cooked in a bush kitchen and as far as possible from the resources of the property (warning: you may be eating what you've been looking at, but trust me, spicy wildebeest stir-fry and home-cured eland salami are delicious). The bread is baked in an oven fashioned from an old fire extinguisher!

Anything that isn't done by Bruno is done by Tommy, the only member of staff - the feeling you get is very much that you're joining them at their bush camp, rather than staying as guests in any conventional sense. Although it's called a bush camp there's plenty of hot running water and good solar lighting at your tent; the camp is next to a water hole with hides so you can see who's out there. At night, prepare to be absolutely gobsmacked by the stars - the Milky Way in full view - which you can appreciate from your open-air shower after the afternoon walk!
We reckon we were probably walking around 10k per day - mostly with lots of stops to look at things, but in some cases requiring a reasonable level of fitness. I think he would adjust this according to the guests but you do need to be comfortable being on your feet and walking for 3 or 4 hours. I would not recommend this as a first safari - you are unlikely to see, for instance, the big predators (and you might not want to as all activities are on foot!) - but if you've got an interest in getting a little further under Africa's skin than you might do on other safaris, this place is ideal.

They wrote to us about their stay, saying:

Expert Africa recommended Mundulea to me after I mentioned that one of the things we did not like about safaris was the amount of time spent driving, and that we would not consider the vacation a bust if we did not see the big five (and I had previously mentioned how much I love to walk). We stayed for 3 nights, and we were the only guests so it was truly a private walking safari.

The directions were clear. When we got to the gate it was about a 25 minute drive up to the main farmhouse on the property. I'm not sure what I expected -- but we left our car and immediately had our bags loaded into Bruno's open air safari vehicle for the 20+ minute drive in to the bush camp. I had given no prior thought to the fact that we would be both incommunicado and without power, so my one regret was that I had forgotten to text my kids to tell them we'd be unreachable for the next few days. And I had not thought to bring a spare camera battery -- but luckily had charged it fully the night before, and Bruno was able to charge my iPhone in his vehicle using my USB cord -- so that was my 2nd camera which I used in airplane mode to preserve the battery. So it all worked out despite my lack of prior thinking.

What a magical place Bruno has created! The camp itself is nestled into the bush with all kinds of wonderful details -- chairs made out of the leadwood fence posts he removed from the cattle ranching days, a beautiful dining table made from a tree from the property. Even the fire pit was made from recycled iron bars. I loved our tent -- a very spacious tent with a comfortable bed, an outdoor patio area and an outdoor bathroom with hot and cold running water and flush toilet. What luxury!

After a brief rest upon arrival, we met for coffee in the "kitchen" and then set out on our first walk. The days fell into a very comfortable rhythm. We would meet at 7:15AM for breakfast. Then head out in a new direction around 8:00AM and walk until around noon. After lunch we would rest and/or hang out in the hide to watch animals come to the watering hole and salt lick. Then we would meet for late afternoon coffee and head out for a late afternoon/evening walk -- coming back almost in the dark. This would be followed by a nice cold beer around the fire and dinner, before heading off to bed. We slept more soundly here than anywhere else -- including home!

THE WALKS. Bruno has created an amazing habitat and is a wealth of knowledge about every aspect of it. I loved learning a little bit of everything. Starting with the animals, he showed us all the different tracks -- and could discern not just the difference between all the different antelope tracks, but what they may be doing (such as one male wildebeest chasing another male out of his territory). He could even discern the tracks of different species of snakes. When you are walking you are more likely to scare off animals, or only see them from a distance, so we did not see a ton of animals on our walks. Our two most exciting sightings were 1) a giraffe, and 2) a honey badger we came across trying to get into a giant tortoise. We also saw a few antelope from a distance (a kudu, impala, wildebeest), and a very large male warthog. And a brief ostrich sighting. From the hides (both the camp hide and another, bigger one we visited on our walk) we were able to get much closer -- we enjoyed watching impala, red hartebeest, a tsessebe, tons of warthogs, a dik-dik, oryx and on our last day a herd of 15 kudu. We probably saw our greatest number of animals on our drive out near the farmhouse -- large herds of widlebeest, springbok and impala. But it was so much more than just animals. We learned about lots of different insects -- including the dung beetle, antlion, termite and others. Bruno indulged my interest in wildflowers and spent time at lunch looking through all his books to help me identify them. We learned about the trees -- fig, leadwood, marula, saringa. We learned about the rhino and aardvark from their holes and tracks -- even though we did not see any in the flesh. We did not move quickly, but we covered a lot of ground -- about 7.5 miles (12km) the first day and 9.5 miles (15km) the second day.

We loved our meals here too. His helper, Tommy, was a whiz cooking over the fire. The homemade bread was delicious. Breakfasts were granola, fruit and yogurt with bread. Lunch was a Nicoise style salad with bread. The dinners were the highlight. Kabeljou (fish) with rice and pumpkin; chicken tagine with pasta, and on the last night, eland strips with re-fried polenta and locally grown spinach.

I really didn't want to leave!

A note on clothing. Everything worked out fine -- but I may have done things differently if I had put more thought into it. First a word on shoes. My husband and I both wore trail shoes -- basically high quality sneakers. On day 2 Tom went to remove what he thought was a rock, and discovered it was a thorn that had gone through the sole and pierced the footbed. He then proceeded to pull about 20 thorns from the soles with a pair of pliers -- and I have about 3 or 4! I think a much thicker soled boot would have been a better choice. The same with clothes -- I wore capris and shorts, which worked out fine -- but I did get a few inevitable scratches so a wiser choice may have been long pants. I also was lucky -- due to the unfortunate drought situation the grass was neither thick nor high -- but if it had been a normal year it would have been unpleasant with shorts.

The only negative aspect during our three nights at Mundulea was the puncture by the gate - our second of our holiday and not the fault of Mundelea. After that it was all marvellous.

We were very lucky that Bruno was in residence and he led our walks. Apparently we were the last guests of the year before Bruno closed the camp until January. There was only one other guest so we were a small and quite intimate group. Bruno is fascinating and interesting company and we seemed to spend much time, without noticing the passage of time, discussing his ideas and ideals, world politics and matters of common interest at the communal dining area. Bruno led us on a series of walks from the camp through the bush and was so very informative on flora and fauna as well as landscape and geology. The walking seemed at times to be so tranquil and idyllic, especially in the evenings as the sun was setting.

At Mundulea, one does not see game in such close contact as in game parks where one is driven to waterholes and other such areas where game concentrate. We saw a lot of different antelope and giraffe through the bushes and we were shown signs of pangolin, aardvark, badger, hyena and ostrich as well as fresh tracks of cheetah, lynx and leopard. The walks were more about discovering the habitat and behaviour of animals and about the natural and not-so-natural vegetation and landscape.

After visits to Desert Rhino Camp and Etosha where one sees the game at close quarters, Mundulea offers a contrasting learning opportunity and we were very pleased that we visited after having been to Etosha. We gained so much of the context of the wildlife. A pair of binoculars is absolutely essential as from the top of some of the hills we climbed, Bruno could pick out animals way below.

All the meals at Mudulea were nutritious and delicious and many thanks to Tommy for producing it all by means of a camp fire and wood oven. Our visit was another unforgettable highlight of our stay in Namibia.

A wonderful, remote, no frills bush camp for the benefit of the wild animals almost more than the guests! Comfortable tents, outside bathroom. Good hides to watch the waterhole. Because you are walking everywhere, there is less chance of seeing many animals as they are very nervous. We came very close to black rhino on several occasions, without actually seeing them. Their snorting and thundering feet were quite close enough.

A certain level of fitness is required for this camp as well as strong nerves. Bruno is enormously knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his reserve pointing out many tracks of animals, proving they were there, just not visible! Lion, leopard, hyena, all there, just not seen.

Interesting visit to Sandwich Harbour. Mention was made of possible difficult access due to tides … Sandwich Harbour is not a harbour but a bay and the difficult access is because of the drive to the bay along the beach which can't be done if the tide is too high. Bruno was an excellent host, extraordinarily well informed about every aspect of the reserve so we really got to understand the ecology and ecosystem.

It was refreshing to get out of Toyota landcruisers and connect to the land through the walking trips. Each walk took us in a different direction, looking at a different aspect of the place. The hide a few paces from our tents provided excellent viewing of all the game and birds coming to the waterhole. This included some animals that we didn't see elsewhere including dik-dik, duiker, honey badger, banded mongoose and scrub hare.

The camp was very different from anywhere else we stayed with nearly every item made from the natural resources of the place, or from recycled materials, without compromising comfort. The meals all cooked on the open fire were excellent and we all enjoyed the wide ranging conversation over mealtimes and round the fire with Bruno and the other 2 guests.

It was great having Bruno as our guide giving us insight into the ecology and threats to this from the changing industrial activities in the area. Enjoyed the bird-watching along the way.

Tommy looked after us in camp and cooked delicious meals. This is a different experience to most other lodges I have stayed at. For us it was a highlight of our trip but it is not for everyone. It helps to be reasonably fit because all activities are based around walking. I understand that Bruno will adjust activities to suit his guests but if you can't walk at least 10km (I suggest) I think you would not get the most from this experience. Also, being on foot brings you into contact with fewer animals but the landscape, tracking and stories more than make up for any deficit on that score. Personally I loved the wildness of it and the sink holes and cave systems. I hope I will return one day.

I found our three night stay to be the highlight of the holiday in many ways. It was absolutely fascinating to spend time with Bruno. We learned about geology, flora, fauna, the challenges of establishing and running a reserve, Namibian politics, history, bushcraft and so much more. I also loved being out walking in the bush as opposed to sitting in a jeep. Bruno has high ideals and has taken a very purist approach, yet he is also very honest about the downsides of that and a few mistakes he has made. We saw quite a large range of wildlife while we were there, and tracks of more. However, I don't feel that is really why you go there (Etosha is for ticking off the game). I felt it gave our family the most amazing introduction to the country and knowledge that gave us a really deep understanding and context into which to place everything we saw on the rest of our travels around Namibia.

We were the only guests at the time we stayed (2 adults, plus children aged 14, 11 and 7). We shared three tents, which were very comfortable and with nice touches like the hot water bottles Bruno's colleague Tommy put in for us each night. Solar power gave us plenty of hot water and enough light (though was dim at night so definitely paid to get organised with clothing and toiletries in daylight hours). There were some insects in the outside bathroom as you'd expect including bees which were mentioned in one tripadvisor report - I just sprayed round the loo with insect repellent and it really was not an issue as they were extremely benign. My daughter got a bee up her trouser leg. She calmly peeled them down and out it flew - none of us got any bites or stings while we were there.

The food was fantastic (though I would ditch the breakfast fruit yogurts if I were him in favour if a big bowl of plain yogurt to go with his delicious homemade granola). Again, Bruno takes a purist approach that everything is cooked over the campfire. We were particularly impressed by the bread from the metal bread oven he had built (he has built everything on the camp from beds to chairs to bread ovens), the homemade zebra salami, brisket of eland with polenta. My favourite food of the holiday with perfectly judged portions and always second helpings if wanted.

Bruno was patient with the kids and took a lot of time to explain things at an appropriate level, while also being firm when necessary and expecting them to respect their environment (eg delicate skulls and tools on display, sometimes needing to keep the noise down when out in the bush).

I cannot recommend it highly enough and it was definitely my highlight (and I say that even though we stayed at some uber luxurious places like Little Ongava and Damaraland Camp). I feel I learned a lot and, for me, that was a true luxury.

He is an amazing person not only for what he is doing at Mundulea but for the way he is doing it based on good scientific evidence a lot of which he has developed himself in conjunction with academic biologists. He is a magnificent host & guide & we were lucky enough to have him to ourselves for most of our visit. He seemed to understand the flora & fauna at a deeper level than any other guide we have met. Walking with him was a rare pleasure.
Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer….

Overall, they voted their stay here as: Excellent

Dear Kate, Burger and all at Turnstone

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you but we just wanted to say a huge thank you for the amazing trip that Burger took us on to Sandwich Harbour. He is a top rate guide, knowledgeable, interesting and also very mindful of our safety.
We had an exciting trip, with the tide only just letting us through. As a result our party had Sandwich Harbour all to ourselves which was very special.
Whilst eating lunch we were discussing with Burgher the Turnstone camping trips in search of desert elephants. This is something we would be very interested in for next year…
Best wishes

Dear Bruno and Kate,

Myself and my husband recently arranged a trip to Namibia using Sabrina at Expert Africa. Replying to my query about recommended additional trips Sabina recommended yourselves and a day exploring Sandwich Harbour which we subsequently asked her to book for us for Sunday 3rd September.

Now that we have returned, I wanted to drop a line to say that this was one of the highlights of our trip as the content was unexpected, and to ask you to relay our sincere thanks to our guide Berger.

We shared the day with another English couple also booked via Expert Africa who we got along with very well and saw again at Ongava which was lovely. The four of us had a truly fantastic day thanks to Burger and his knowledge, conversation and engaging personality. His chosen lunch spot on top of the dunes was simply perfect and we saw and enjoyed an experience that we had not anticipated in Namibia. Many thanks for some very special memories.

We wish you all continued success,
Very Kind Regards,

Anna & Malcolm

Undoubtedly one of the many highlights of our trip. We thoroughly recommend this tour to those who stay in Swakopmund.
Burger took us out to Sandwich Harbour along the shore and then back over the dunes for wonderful views and a picnic on the top.

Thanks,

Hi Kate,

Here is some feedback from you from one of my travellers, sound like they had a great time, thanks for looking after them so well.

Picked up promptly by guide who was a laugh from start to finish. Wonderful trip towards Sandwich Bay and treated to the sight of 3 Hump Back whales migrating along the coast, together with seeing a newly born seal pup and mother. Only slight dampener of the trip was one of the other people on the tour was scared of going up and down the high dunes, so we had to remain on the lower slopes and areas (until the end when we got to go down a really steep dune). Fabulous lunch amongst the dune. Would do this tour again and again as you would always get to see something new and different.

Kind regards,
Tom

Dear Kate,

having finished our little Journey today, I would like to give you a short feedback on our experience with Turnstone Tours. It was definitely a highlight on the trip! The guide, Mr. Burger, was really cool and professional and more than a competent driver. Great appreciation for that. The meal was also great, certainly more than expected, and the vegetarian options were satisfying. The payment has been deducted without complications, despite the inconvenience. We will definitely recommend you further.

They wrote to us about their stay, saying:

For us Mundulea was by far the highlight of our stay in Namibia. But it wouldn't necessarily be the case for everyone.

Mundulea is a private game reserve created by Bruno Nebe. Accommodation is set within a small tented camp, with its own waterhole. There were a total of 6 guests, including the two of us, during our stay. The only activity (other than talking, eating, drinking, and sleeping) is walking in the reserve, expertly guided by Bruno. Tommy stays behind to cook the most delicious meals over an atmospheric open fire, one of many highlights being the daily fresh, home-made bread….

What staying in Mundelea gives its very lucky guests is an intense, in-depth, understanding of how wild game and its environment, the whole integrated chain of life, operates, from the termites, beetles, guinea fowl, snakes, up to the predators.
This was a uniquely powerful experience for us - it might not have the same appeal for others. You may not see a lot of animals or being able to tick boxes on the number of different species seen.

For example, we didn't see leopard, except a hazy dark outline at dusk at our waterhole, but we did hear the leopard call (a distinctive, rasping, sawing sound) all night 5 minutes (or less ) from our tent and the next morning we followed the tracks of the leopard female, and her companions from just outside our camp. Plus we just avoided tripping over a languid black mamba (Obviously Bruno saw it well in time, a few metres ahead of us).

Overall, they voted their stay here as: Excellent

Hi Kate
Just a little note to let you know we all absolutely loved our time with Burger and obviously need not have worried at all about the heat side of things!

Burger is a fantastic guide, as I am sure you guys know. We learnt so much but in such a relaxed informal way and while having an amazing adventure at the same time. But equally we didn't have to worry about a thing with delicious food, excellent driving, ideas about how best to see and do everything and so on. It was perfect! I know the kids will remember camping in the desert with Burger forever. Our eldest was scoring all the places we had stayed and desert camping with Burger got the full 30 out of 30 which nowhere else got so that's praise for you! Please tell Burger that Winnie cried all the way to Windhoek on the plane that she 'missed Burger' and her two little friends from home, so he has clearly become one of her friends.

I don't know if Chris told you that Tom and I are both long established at Lonely Planet (18 years). I now work on the kids/family travel side and will definitely be recommending you guys to anyone who asks about taking the kids to Namibia. As will Tom on more general (non-family) questions.

All the very best

Dear Bruno,

The purpose of this email is simply to say that our days with you were the highlight of our trip; we both thought Mundelea was marvellous and Sandwich was good fun.
Of it all, the very simple moment when the warthog family snuffled their way upwind towards us is perhaps my favourite photo of my memory: a real bit of Africa. The scrambles up the outcrops were good too, but the truth is that we will have to return when the weather is right. We hope to do so.

Wonderful things have and are happening at Mundulea…. Anyway, I just wanted you to know we loved it. It was easily the best camp we visited.

Thanks for making their experience so memorable! Of the Sandwich Harbour day tour, Amita B said:
One of the best days of my life! Burger took us to see the salt pans with flamingos, pelicans and other birds and then the lagoons between the ocean and the dunes. Sandwich Harbour is fabulous and we had the place to ourselves, soaking in the sun and the wind and sea, enjoying the strange plants up close and glorying in that vast serene expanse…An extraordinary glimpse into the desert!

I can't recommend this trip highly enough. Through the dunes, the dolerite dykes and the dry riverbed, Bruno was a brilliant guide. He opened up the desert for us: exciting and unusual sights followed one another in quick succession as we saw rare plants and animals, looked at strange rocks, learned about the geology and current threats to the environment. The picnic lunch was delicious and we came away feeling that we'd had our fill of memorable experiences.

Thanks again!

There was a lot of interest there such as archaeological remains, including hut rock circles and rock paintings. Although we didn't get to see any cheetah we did find the remains of two cheetah kills. The second night was camping in the fog and it was fascinating to see its effect on the desert landscape especially the lichens and the small rock pools of condensed water.

We were collected from our guesthouse by Burger, we were advised that we needed to hurry as there was a long journey to make before the tide turned. The route to Sandwich Harbour took us along the beach where we saw sea lions of all ages, wonderful pelicans and both greater and lesser flamingos. The desert dunes end here and are washed into vertical banks by the tide. We passed the deserted and sand filled former whaling station and reached the lagoon where we were given time to explore or climb one of the dunes.

The return journey turned out to be quite a race against the incoming tide. The beach had all but disappeared and there were hair raising moments when Burger had to time our progress with the advancing waves. We made it unscathed and stormed up and down the dunes to reach a viewpoint where a delicious homemade lunch with soft drinks emerged from the back of the truck…

Accommodation in tents is suitably rustic and perfectly comfortable with luxurious-feeling duvets and an attached bathroom with flush toilet, shower, sink, horns for hanging one's towel over and a piece of stone to act as counter space.

Food is quite good with outstanding nutty bread cooked over a bush fire. Be aware that, although Mundulea is expensive, it is not a luxury lodge but a wonderful experience for people who want an extremely knowledgeable guide and really love being "in the bush."

The camp is simple but very comfortable. Food was very good and more the style of home cooking which we enjoyed. A bonus was a porcupine who came to visit us at dinner time most nights.

Our stay here was exceptional. Mundulea is a very special place and we feel privileged to have spent 4 days here.

Overall, they voted their stay here as: Excellent

Dear Bruno and Kate,

I want to thank you both for my family's wonderful experience at Mundulea with Bruno, Tommy, and the plant and wild life. It was very moving to see the animals close up and luxurious to stay in the relaxed bush camp with so much personal attention, such good food, pleasing spaces and objects, and hot water(!). Our morning at Mundulea's large waterhole, with the great variety of animals, was one of our best experiences in Africa, and I loved my several hours alone watching the animals at the camp's water trough from the hide while my son and husband were out walking with Bruno one afternoon. We all enjoyed getting out of the car and walking and all we learned from Bruno.

We very much enjoyed our stay in Etosha following Mundulea. Seeing three rhinos communing, one mother and child and another adult at Halali's waterhole our first night, was a deep and new experience. The slowness of their motions and what seemed their affectionate communication was unexpected for me.

The Okakeujo waterhole was amazing. We saw a herd of breeding elephants there just an hour after we arrived, with the baby elephants playing under their mother's huge bodies. Also plenty of rhinos. We also managed to see three adult lions --- after waiting and watching at Rjietfontein --- we learned they had been seen there in the siting book (thank you for the tip Bruno). But we missed Bruno, and not having knowledgeable rangers on the spot to answer our questions, as we do in U.S. national parks. …
I will write a review of Mundulea on Trip Advisor, perhaps not until I return home to my computer. Please feel free to quote from my email on your websites.

Best regards,
Alexi

Dear Bruno,

My wife and I just wanted to tell you how much fun we had this month on our camping tour with Wayne Huchison. He is a fabulous guide – so knowledgeable, and such a fun person to be with! … Wayne's expertise and love for Namibian wildlife, geology, biology, culture and conservancy was obvious… He even found desert elephants for us! I also wanted to thank Kate for her concern about us as vegetarians. We spent 6 weeks in Africa, and I can tell you that the best vegetarian food we had on our entire trip was during our 4 day camping tour.

Best regards, Ray and Judi (New Jersey, USA).

Definite highlight of our trip: whisked straight off into the bush as soon as we drove up to farmhouse for a fantastic 4 days walking with Bruno and learning about everything from geology to animal skulls, and how he is trying to recreate bush from farm. He is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what he is doing. Learned lots about the land, tracking animals etc. Saw plenty of antelope at the water hole, but not a place to go if you just want to see animals.

Bruno isn't a guide, he is a conservationist, and you are privileged to see a tiny bit of his work.

Basic bush camp, shared by porcupine! Excellent food cooked over open fire.
We were the only guests at first, joined by another couple for 2 days.
We loved it (2 parents, 20+ year old daughters).

This is a totally different experience than the other posher camps. The accommodations were rougher but still quite nice. This is all walking, so may not be for everyone. We loved it. We did a 10km and the 6km walk the first day. One does not see many animals on the walks - the blinds are best for this - but Bruno uses the Socratic method to great advantage asking us to elucidate some particular scat, track, or signs of some event. The only suggestion would be to take a five to ten minute sit down break every hour or so.

This was very different to all our other accommodation on the trip as it is a basic bush camp with open-fire kitchen. It is a walking camp run and guided by the owner Bruno. Stayed three nights during which time we were the only guests in the camp with him and his helper Tommy. From the moment we arrived we did not get in a vehicle until the day we left. This is all about the reserve Bruno has set up for endangered species and his encyclopaedic knowledge. He was the most informative and knowledgeable guide of the trip. The weather was unseasonably hot which led to some steamy bush walks as the sun rose in the sky. There are hides by the tents which are rewarding. Best of all was a full early morning walk to a large water hole attracting all manner of visitors. Despite the basic facilities the vegetarian food was better than most of the other camps. It is an intensely personal experience and it is a privilege to share in Bruno's vision.

A truly special and unique place. Clearly reflecting the character and interests of its creator the camp was full of fascinating improvisation from the fire extinguisher bread oven (We want one!) to the lead wood baboon proof chairs!

We learnt so much and it was an absolute delight and privilege to share for a brief while Bruno's interests and experience. Is there anyone in Africa he doesn't know? From guides we had in Zambia five years ago, to canoeists in Swakopmund, to someone I last met in Swaziland 49 years ago! A slightly less luxurious camp than some of the true glamping affairs but perfectly thought through to provide a very comfortable stay.

Probably the best food we had in a trip full of fabulous meals - thank you Tommy (and Tommy 2 for the campfire entertainment)!

One small word of warning - it was the only place where it was really quite cold at nights (being slightly higher than elsewhere). Be prepared and have a magical time!

Hi Nicole and Bruno

We are safely back in RSA after a long trip home.

I wanted to give you some feedback on our trip. We had a truly amazing trip with Achim. It was fascinating to spend a day with someone as knowledgeable on the desert as he is. His passion for nature conservation is not something that one finds easily in this day and age. He shared some of his personal experiences and history with us and showed us photographs of his life near Sandwich Harbour. It was a very personal touch that made the trip all the more interesting. On our trip home, I asked my kids over dinner what the highlight of the trip was. They were unanimous that it was the day they spent with Achim in the desert.

Please convey our thanks and appreciation to him for making our day a very special one.

Best wishes

They wrote to us about their stay, saying:

It was a real privilege to be able to stay here. For those who are interested in or already know something about ecology, geology and/or natural systems, a visit to Mundulea is wonderful. It is an opportunity to see a unique attempt to restore an ecological system, and to discuss the processes and interactions both large and small. We valued the opportunity to learn from Bruno, whose mix of knowledge and experience makes for very interesting discussions on a range of topics, not just on the things we could see around us. Mundulea would not be everybody's cup of tea - for example, whilst Mundulea is perfectly comfortable, for the money it would be possible to have a more luxurious or opulent stay in a lodge or hotel elsewhere.

The tents we stayed in were comfortable and we liked that the fixtures and fittings had been ingeniously made from recycled materials. The tent and outdoor bathrooms did get extremely cold (it was unusually cold when we were visiting - well below freezing - but it is a fairly good bet that it will get cold here and other places at night at this time of year)- hot water bottles were provided but still visitors should ensure they pack thermals for evenings and nights. We were colder here than anywhere else. The food we were served was really tasty and all the more impressive because we could see how it was being ingeniously cooked over one fire.

We visited Mundulea early in our trip, which meant that we hadn't seen much of the wild plants or animals that we would have had we already visited Etosha or other areas. However, Bruno did a good job of not making us feel too ignorant (well.. most of the time!). The way he challenged us to interpret what we found on our walks was really stimulating, it's a really good way to learn. Although we did see lots of interesting 'big' animals, it was nice to be able to discuss and explore less obvious but equally interesting flora and fauna. We also had quite a lot interesting discussions about geology, reflecting our interests.

Compared to other places we found it refreshing to be able to walk and explore, rather than sitting in a car or following a prescribed route (as was necessary for other places we visited in central - north Namibia).

The private road within the reserve up to the farm house was a little rough with some vegetation between the wheel tracks which was a little too much for our Toyota Corolla hire car. Indeed, when leaving the reserve we damaged the undercarriage of our car despite driving at close to a snail's pace. We would recommend to prospective guests at Mundulea that a standard saloon car is not suitable to access the reserve.
(Note from Bruno: we are sorry that this happened. We graded the farm road carefully the following day and now it is fine to drive even a saloon car along the way)

Turnstone Tour to Sandwich Harbour – Start Date: 20-Jun-2015 – Overall comment: Excellent

Cai - our guide and driver for the day was a fount of knowledge and very good company. He dealt with a flat tyre with ease and added just enough danger to an exhilarating drive through the dunes on our way back. He was absolutely brilliant!

We were lucky in our wild life sightings too - with terns of many kinds, hawks, pelicans and of course flamingos being just a few.
The carcass of a whale - before it had begun to smell was also an amazing sight.

I would really recommend this trip to anyone with a spare day in Swakopmund.

This camp is very different and exciting. Location is magical: a proper camp set right in the bush. No contact with the outside world except satellite phone. Walking only guided by Bruno who has a huge amount of knowledge of the surroundings and wildlife. Cooking is over an open fire. Tents have solar powered lighting and an open shower-hot water in the evening and luke warm in the morning.

The "basic" feel about this accommodation may not suit everyone but for us this was a wonderful experience which we will remember with great affection forever. The combination of walking, being actually in the bush, excellent guiding and the waterholes were fantastic.
One suggestion: we think it would be a good idea to have a charging point if that were possible.

As ever we had a wonderful few days with Bruno learning more about the whole ecosystem, and the progress of all Bruno's hard work trying to restore the area to what it had once been, before it was a cattle farm. We managed plenty of walking while Bruno taught us much about what we saw along the way. And although, as is the nature of these things, you are not guaranteed to have game sightings, we drew the lucky straw on this occasion and saw plenty. Including an eland calf just a few days old. Whilst we were there on one afternoon and evening we listened to and watched a lightning storm, which brought with it some early rain which was torrential and which lasted several hours.

The food was excellent (Soya Milk was provided) and much time was enjoyed in the evening round the fire & dinner table discussing Bruno's plans for Mundulea and learning more about Namibian life and the country.

We spent three night here at the end of our Namibian trip and had a marvellous time. Bruno is an impressive and entertaining interpreter of the landscape and wildlife - and not as restricted in walking as he ought to have been given that he had broken a bone in his foot days before we arrived.
After a lot of driving and viewing big game earlier in our trip, it was good to get more walking and to focus on the smaller birds, animals, plant life and landscape in a setting which is changing so significantly as part of Bruno’s “re-wilding” process.

The camp itself is fun - with leadwood {baboon proof} furniture and an incredible array of recycled equipment in the open kitchen and boma. The lively and educational conversations over dinner and around the fire were as good as the walks and helped make the stay memorable.

No luxuries but we didn't expect them however the beds were comfy and the en-suite, fitted with animal skulls and a turtle shell for a soap dish was great.
Food was some of the best we had with Bruno and Tommy creating miracles with a camp fire.
We were so lucky that no other people had booked while we were there so had Bruno all to ourselves. His knowledge and enthusiasm is unrivalled and for anyone interested in the whole ecology of Namibia and not just the 'big five' it is a wonderful, educational three days.
Need to be hardy as five hours walking in the heat during the morning was quite tough but it was worth it. The evening walk of two or three hours was easier though avoiding the acacia trees was a full time event!

It was a real treat to spend time in the bush with Bruno. When we arrived we were whisked off to observe the rescue, tagging and release of a very rare pangolin, an animal we would never otherwise have seen. This was followed by 3 nights in bush camp with Bruno and Tommy (who looked after the camp and cooking), walking and learning about anything and everything to do with Namibia. Although we did not see many animals while walking, there were many tracks and traces.

Bruno’s knowledge of plants, animals, geology and politics is exemplary and he takes obvious pleasure in sharing this.
The only slight criticism is that the walks sometimes seemed to be rather lacking in objective. The vegetation at this time of year can be rather uninspiring. Perhaps a little more discussion and briefing before each walk might have helped.

What a very different experience from anything else we have done in Southern Africa before, but an amazing few days amidst an extraordinary project to create a reserve as it would have been before it had been farmed.

Bruno’s knowledge is second to none - breakfast, lunch and dinner time was a feast of simple but delicious food as well as an opportunity to hear more of the story of Mundulea, as well as understanding so much more about conservation, poaching and other subjects relevant to Namibia and its neighbours.
Not for the faint hearted given all the walking in the bush and essential to take good walking shoes or boots, but so rewarding for the effort that goes in.

''Didn't arrive until after dark. Bruno is amazing. Needed another day here. So stimulating… walking was wonderful learning about the small things, footprints, discovering slowly just what Bruno has there and what he does. Didn't get to the caves, but we radio tracked a pangolin, so exciting, and saw the fresh rhino prints whilst on foot, worrying, hoped to see them from the truck but secretive. Talked about so many things. Rhino work amazing. Lovely tents, magnificent food and setting Rave, rave, rave. I don't think it would suit everyone, but it was us.''

We all thoroughly enjoyed our trip into the desert… Your guide's love of 'the bush' comes across so clearly and you are able to convey this so well. The lunch was quite delicious and just perfect in those surroundings - Picnic at Hanging Rock! Keep up the home cooking! There is nothing like homemade food when you are travelling!

We would like to thank Turnstone for giving us one big, busy, and beautiful day of touring around the Swakopmund and Walvis Bay areas. Howard and I enjoyed our guide, and we were most impressed by his detailed knowledge of the plant and geological world of your part of Namibia! In addition to sharing his knowledge, anecdotes and love of the beautiful area there, he kept us on track, and covered absolutely everything we had requested to see!!! Although, he probably found our interests a little unusual (townships and cemeteries), he obliged to give us time at each of them, without a pause!

So, we just want to give a shout out of personal thanks to Ernst for doing such a good job of introducing us to his country and its many wonders. We would also like to compliment the "chef" who put our great lunch together. Everything was so good; so fresh! And our "picnic stop" was perfect as we enjoyed some quiet time listening to the birds….

Dear Bruno and Kate,

Our family did a day tour of Sandwich Harbour on March 20th and I wanted to let you know how very much we enjoyed it. We spent 2 weeks in Botswana, Zambia and Namibia and that day was one of our favourites with one of our very best guides. The scenery was beautiful and our guide was so fantastic - very enthusiastic, informative, always giving great info instead of us having to ask. We also really appreciate that you got the sand boards per our request as it gave us an opportunity to do that which we otherwise wouldn't have had.
We loved Namibia and will surely call you when we hopefully return some day!
Kind regards,

Mr Alastair N x 2
They arrived on: 14-Sep-2013
They left on: 18-Sep-2013

They wrote to us about their stay, saying:

Mundulea is a private reserve where the owner, Bruno, is looking to restore the environment to its pre-cattle farming state. This is not a short-term project as over-grazing has caused significant bush-encroachment. But Bruno is very dedicated to the cause, which is well worth supporting - not least because this sort of private project may ultimately (and sadly) prove to be the best hope for Africa's megafauna in particular in the medium- to long-term.

Bruno himself is a true (latter-day) 'renaissance man';. Sculptor, film-maker, photographer, birding guide and bush expert, he has a wealth of knowledge on a wide range of topics and is genuinely curious about many others. Over the four nights we were there our conversations ranged across, inter alia, the origins of multi-cell life (based on local fossils), the eating habits of porcupines (more complex than you might think), the genetics of the zebra (and kite) family, undoing the damage of over-intensive farming, local politics, the Chinese in Africa, and human dietary issues.

Mundulea is a true bush camp. But the accommodation is very comfortable - and we commend in particular the shower which is as good as any we have found on our numerous trips to Africa. Much of the fittings have been made by Bruno and his team from locally available materials (including scrap metal from the area's farming days). Bruno produces amazingly good meals on an open fire, which would do credit to many a modern kitchen.

The waterhole right outside the camp attracts a good range of mammals day and night and, although we were a few weeks early for the peak period, we also saw a wide range of birds.

Best of all, no trucks! Mundulea is all about walking and we enjoyed some excellent rambles through the bush morning and evening.

In short, highly recommended.

Hello! In mid-July we were blessed with the opportunity to travel to Namibia. Africa Travel Resources planned our life-changing trip and set us up with a tour with you. Even though we experienced a serious car accident that delayed us for a day (but in which, miraculously, no one was hurt), you were willing to work with us and gave us an abbreviated day tour. We appreciated your company's flexibility and professionalism! We were especially grateful for the expertise and caring of our guide, Ernst Ritter. His combination of knowledge and heart was unbeatable!! He went far out of his way to show us as much of the wildlife of Walvis Bay as we could possibly squeeze into one afternoon!

Many, many thanks for an enormously memorable tour! We will recommend you and Turnstone to everyone we know!! Keep inspiring guests to care of Namibia until we can return.

Dear Kate
Today has been a wonderful day in Swakopmund. The flamingos were amazing as were the sand dunes complete with ostriches, jackals - one feasting on a dead seal, and a great dune- top lunch of delicious food. But the essential ingredient was our driver and guide Ernst Ritter who shared his knowledge and love of the area, the dunes and the wildlife with such enthusiasm and depth of information that I have gained an enormous appreciation of this unique area.

Hi again.

We're back home again now after a fantastic trip to Namibia and just wanted to say a huge thanks once again for hosting us at Mundulea and making our time there so memorable and informative. Going slowly on foot and putting together the jigsaw pieces from the signs and clues we found was brilliant as was sitting silently in the hide while the eland herd plucked up courage to drink (we'd love to come back some day and photograph them) before 'Odetta' the rhino ( is that the right spelling?) finally came out of the shadows to drink was magical. We had great fun and learned a huge amount; not least your recipe for Molotov Cocktails which we tried out at Halali with great success!!

Hi Kate and Bruno

I trust that you are all keeping well.

We are finally enjoying warm days and sunshine, it is nearly as nice as being home :-)

I wanted to forward you these clients feedback and to say thank you for offering such an excellent activity.

They clients rated the tour as EXCELLENT

A marvellous day with driver and guide Ernest who was unbelievably knowledgeable and so obviously passionate about the geology, birds, flora and fauna of this beautiful area. We were taken on a 3 hour walk through the (muddy) lagoon and dunes and the drive to Sandwich along the beach and back through the dunes (necessitated by high tide) was simply stunning. Whilst the excellent picnic lunch had to be taken in a wind-sheltered hollow rather than on top of a dune which Ernest would have preferred in less windy conditions, it was still a memorable meal.

Whilst the trip appears to be relatively expensive, the personal nature of it, attention to detail and the wonderful location make it unmissable if staying in Swakopmund for a few days.

Excellent.
The tour to experience Sandwich Harbour was an EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE! This place is beautiful & Turnstone goes out of their way to make this a memorable visit. One thing to keep in mind is that you have to get up early in the morning to be able to get into Sandwich Harbour before high tide cuts out access... Sea level changes & Turnstone called us the night before saying they will pick us up at 6:30am rather than 8am next morning. But then again, the best time of day in Namibia IS early morning & late evening so you get used to getting up early.

Hello Kate,

Should describe ourselves as ex-tourists for the time being because we arrived home late last Wednesday and we're already back into the routine of everything!

We'd like to thank you, Bruno and staff for our wonderful whirlwind romance with some of the best Namibia has to offer.

Ernst Ritter deserves special mention. His passion for his job and the environment and his knowledge is astonishing. We're sorry we kept him out late on a couple of occasions. That last dune, that glorious sunset and birds tardy to the roost are to blame!

We had such a fabulous time. I've wanted to see Sossusvlei for a long time and wasn't disappointed and even in central Australia I have never seen a night sky like that on our first camping night. Leigh climbed "Big Daddy" and his photos are unbelievable. Sandwich Harbour is also stunning. We loved the camping even though it's been a while since we've pitched a tent and slept on the ground etc.. The expanses of grass and the colours of land and sky will be vivid in our memories for quite awhile.

We read about Turnstone Tours via a Lonely Planet guide. Few people in Australia know much about Namibia and even less about its amazing environment.
I bought a NAM bumper stick for my car. We'd certainly recommend Turnstone to anyone else who wanted a similar experience.

Good luck with the studies we heard you are taking,

Best regards to you all,

Kathleen O'Connor and Leigh Hart

Previous guests have expounded on the wonders of Mundulea, and we can only add our admiration for what Bruno is succeeding in doing on this vast reserve.

Yes, the tents are simple, but not basic, the beds are very comfortable, the night-sky view from the loo extraordinary, and the wake up calls of the francolins and the babblers something to be experienced. We even had a leopard calling metres from our tent in the night. Bruno's home cooking was the best food we had on the whole trip (and that is saying something). We were the only guests so we had two days of gentle trailing with Bruno and his son, during which we learnt so much about the animals, plants and the exceptional geology of the area, not to mention history and politics! Like many other guests, we have become "poo" experts and we now have to find a use for all our knowledge in rural Sussex!

This is a true bush-camp but with enough of the creature-comforts to make it a wonderful experience for all ages. We could not recommend it too highly.

For Bruno
A belated thank you for our fantastic stay at Mundulea, which was definitely the highlight of our Namibian trip. We both feel that we have learnt so much about the bush, its plants and animals and we thank you for stretching our brains rather than just feeding us information!

We wish you every success with Mundulea. We really enjoyed meeting Cai and spending time with you both. Sunset picture attached.

Dear Kate, Bruno and Ernst,

In the meantime I am already 2 weeks back in the office. Wow time flies when you are back in the office. Anyway, finally I found time to give sent you an email.

Again, thank you very much for offering this tour for us at a special rate. My husband Roger and I had a wonderful time with Ernst as our guide as I also told to Bruno on the phone the next day. The knowledge of Ernst is unbelievable from geology to flora and fauna and so on. And besides that he is a very nice person to be with as well. He took so much time for us, we were only back in Swakopmund at 19h00! Bruno already phoned Ernst a couple of times if something went wrong, ha ha or if we got stuck in the sand or something. No no no, nothing went wrong at all. We were just enjoying our time at Sandwich Harbour and in the lagoon in Walvis Bay. For lots of people the Sandwich Harbour Tour is one of the highlights of their trip to Namibia and now I can only endorse this. Sandwich Harbour is beautiful especially the view from the dunes, but what makes this tour even more interesting to me is the knowledge of Ernst. This is why I will not forget about it. THANKS A LOT!!! Please sent my kind regards to Ernst and thanks to him again.

Everything was provided by Bruno and Tommy, Bruno cooking over a fire after a full day out with us walking which was no mean feat. We learned a lot and had close sightings of a variety of animals, some very close to camp. The access road was difficult after prolonged rainfall, maybe at some point it will have to be addressed.

A welcome experience and a change from luxurious lodges, an adventure really.

Dear Bruno,

Thanks once again for a superb experience at your lovely Bush Camp and for looking after us so well; we consider ourselves extremely fortunate for being there on our own.
Best wishes Anne & Fred

Afternoon Kate and Bruno

We are back in Gaborone after a 6 day stay in Swakopmund one of which day was spent with your Ernst Ritter at the Sandwich habour. We had such a wonderful time with him taking us through the habour and the dunes adjacent to it. We did communicate our appreciation direct to Ernst but knowing he does his work under your supervision we believe it appropriate to express our sppreciation to the Turnstone company/family. Our holiday was a success in part due to the part your tour made. If we ever come (or plan to come) back we will definitely give you a call and see where else you can take us in your beautiful country. By the way we have several pictures we took on the day if you are interested to have any do advise and we will forward you copies.

All the best in the new year!

Bruno,
We spent a very wonderful day with you this past August out at Sandwich Harbor. Both Mary and myself can't thank you enough, it was one of the highlights of you trip, and Mary's "I've got a stabilizing lens" still gets a laugh or two.

We don't watch much TV particularly American prime time news, but on a recent trip to the Oregon coast at the small motel we were at, we happen to see a program called the Today Show that was highlighting Namibia. You can imagine our surprise when we saw that the Matt Lauer and the NBC crews had chosen Turnstone and you for their guide service.

It brought back many delightful memories and a bit of travel longing for Namibia.
Best of luck to you and thank you again for a memorable time.

Hi,

I just thought I'd write to say how much we enjoyed our trip yesterday. Our guide was excellent and showed a real in depth knowledge of the area and its history and biology and conveyed real warmth for the subject. It has been a highlight of our trip so far and a really special opportunity to get to understand the ecology of the area.

Maybe next time we are back we'll try one of your longer tours!

We would love to see Mundulea in summer and Bruno says late March is a good time, so you haven’t seen the last of us!

Hi Kate & Bruno

I hope that you both had a lovely weekend,
I just wanted to email you this family’s feedback after their Turnstone Tour to Sandwich Harbor.

They rated the overall experience as “EXCELLENT!”

Please see their feedback below:

“We had great expectations and were not disappointed. Our driver and guide Ernst, was very knowledgeable and easy-going.We passes the guano islands and salt mines, saw masses of flamingoes and pelicans and decided to have lunch amid the dunes, as it seemed too windy at the ocean. The picnic lunch provided by Ernst was delicious and the location superb. We then waited for low tide in order to continue our trip to sandwich harbor, left the car and continued barefoot on top of a dune in order to enjoy the view over the mouth of the Swakop river and enjoyed hearing the dunes "sing" as we run down again. On our return the fogs moved in, we could hardly see a thing, but enormous flocks of cormorans overtaking us. The day was one of our highlights and I would highly recommend it to anyone!”

Hello my name is Kate Graham and I recently visited Namibia with a group of friends. We went on the day tour of Sandwich Harbour with Earnst as our tour guide. This trip was amazing and Earnst did a great job showing us the sites as well as the scares going down the dunes. The only down side was our two friends are vegetarians and we informed the tour that we had two vegi's beforehand. Unfortunately they didn't prepare vegetarian meals for them and they were only able to eat the salad and bread. Otherwise we had an amazing time and really enjoyed the tour.

Thanks so much,

Hello Kate,
I’m back in Canada now – and haunted by the landscapes seen on our trip to Soussosvlei.
Both my husband and I are business people and know that the success of an enterprise depends on the quality of its staff. I hope you & Bruno know the treasure you have in Ernst. He really is amazing. His love and knowledge of Namibia is extraordinary – he knows where to find the most stunning places away from other people so that the isolation of Namibia can truly be enjoyed; his people skills are exceptional and he knows how to connect with differing personalities and to cater to different capacities among his group in a sensitive and caring manner. His knowledge of the flora and fauna always adds interest to the tour and his driving skills under all kinds of conditions inspires total confidence even in a nervous passenger like me. And he knew us well enough to know that seeing Soussosvlei with water was well worth changing our plans at the last minute.

And thanks to the organization at Turnstone for comfortable sleeping arrangements when camping and all the many little things that have to be right for a trip to go smoothly.
How lucky I am to have found your organization on the ‘net so many years ago and to have benefitted so often from the extraordinary tours you offer.
Thank you.

Hard to believe that we're already back in grey and gloomy England, but we have great memories (and a million photos) of Namibia - and of Sandwich Harbour in particular. All four of us reckon that the day was one of the biggest highlights of our whole trip. It was also the perfect way for me to forget about (almost) being a mere 60 years old. The location was brilliant, Wayne was brilliant, the weather was brilliant, the champagne lunch was brilliant. So I just wanted to thank you: Turnstone Tours is a great operation (and I'll be sure to tell our friends, and to give you glowing feedback when I get round to posting some kind of report on Tripadvisor).

I just wanted to thank you and Bruno - Khanh and I both had an incredible time at Mundulea, and I really wish my partner Lynn had been able to make it. Bruno's encyclopaedic knowledge made for fabulous learning, but his open and inquiring attitude, meditative and thoughtful approach, and inspiring committed worldview made the for a truly unique experience, and connection - for us at any rate!

Even more than the hours spent at the waterhole, revelling in the quiet and the reserve of the animals, I will treasure the many conversations we had each night, about cooking, Namibia's history, politics, National Geographic, cooking (Bruno and I both got heaps of ideas, I think) anything and everything! I would really love to come back, and spend some more time, it was certainly the apex of an amazing trip. If you and the family should ever find yourselves in Australia, do please feel free to get in touch - it would be a real treat to return some of the hospitality we received in our time at Mundulea....

Wow, we visited Mundulea as the first stop on our trip to Namibia and the visit changed our lives. Visiting Mundulea first turned out to be a good thing (because we were able to absorb all the details about the country's history, geology, flora and fauna and politics at the start of our trip) and also a bad thing, because as my 13 year old son commented "after talking to Bruno for three days pretty much everything anyone else had to say was repetitive"! Bruno's vision at Mundulea is to recreate the natural environment of Namibia's Central Highlands, including the animal and plant species endemic to the area. This remarkable project is now well advanced and the property has established herds of Eland, Kudu, Giraffe, Warthog, Blackfaced Impala, Roan Antelope, Zebra, Ostrich as well as many other ungulates and carnivores all the way up to Leopard. While the accomodations at Mundulea are not as luxurious as others. our kids voted Bruno's open-fire cooked meals the best of our destinations in Namibia. More importantly the passion, depth of knowledge and experience he brings to the task of guiding his clients around the property are infectious and result in an extraordinary educational, environmental and scientific experience for the young and the young at heart. If your preference is to see your game from the back of a land rover with half a dozen others then this is not the destination for you; if however you prefer the surprise of a truly wild animal crossing your path as you walk through their territory, then you will find Mundulea a dream come true.

Dear Bruno and Kate

First on behalf of my duaghter, Lyn, my husband Trevor and myself we want to say thank you to Ernst for an excellent tour to Sandwich Harbour via the desert on Wed 21 April. Ernst was an outstanding guide and taught us so much. We really enjoyed everything about the day and my husband's comment was that it was worth every penny we paid.

Many thanks

Dear Bruno and Kate,

We have only just returned home from South Africa as we were grounded due to the vulcano ashes over Europe ... Our trip to Namibia was amazing and we all feel it has changed us lots. Our visit to Mundulea was amazing, it put our visit to this planet in a whole different perspective and our amazement and reverence for nature have gone through the roof. Thanks so much for a great 3/4 days, Bruno, and for all your wise lessons ...

Love,

Mette, Gijsbert, Carmen, Thierry and Emiel

Dear Bruno,

There is no doubt that the highlight of our tour of Namibia was the two days out with you. Anne enjoyed them as much as me. Thank you so much for taking us out to see the desert, Welwitschia and much more. It was most enjoyable to meet you and to learn from your extensive knowledge about an area about which I knew so little.
Our whole tour of Namibia went well and we had absolutely no problems on the rest of the tour. We really enjoyed Hobatere and Erongo as well.

Many thanks and very best wishes,
Iain and Anne

Dear Kate,
I wanted to let you know how much the four of us enjoyed the Sandwich Harbour day out with Ernst on the 13th; it really was one of the best days we had in Namibia. Ernst was a mine of information imparted with passion – to find oneself gripped by a guano platform is quite something ! It was great to cover so many different aspects of the area, from the salt pans to settlements drowned by sanddunes, from huge flocks of cormorants to a drive along the sand at the edge of the dunes that was interesting to say the least ! He was great company, very mindful certainly of my limitations which I appreciated, and couldn’t have been a better host for the day. We were also dead lucky with the other three Brits on the tour, who were great company.

And as for the picnic … I understand that it was all prepared by the company housekeeper, I think her name is Paulina ? We asked Ernest to pass on our compliments to the chef, and perhaps you would reiterate how much we enjoyed her delicious food. If there is ever a Turnstone cookbook I would like a copy please !

Just a word of thanks for a memorable trip down to Sandwich Harbour. Wayne was a superb guide and was sensitive to the needs of all his guests. Although our main interest is in birds, Wayne's commentary on all the aspects of the dunes, including the geology and archeology, was truly fascinating. The drive back along the beach between tide and

This was so good, and Ernest our guide excellent. Weather intervened again here and he rang early morning to say cause of the really bad winds we could not go till lunch time. He picked us up plus 2 others and we had a wonderful trip along the coast, his knowledge of everything was good. We had a good lunch did some bird watching and walking and some riding up and down on the dunes in the landrover, digging for water , watching jackels. And because we had missed the morning he continued on until it was dark and then looked for Brown Hyenas, cause we had mentioned we would like to see them, we didn't, but none the less he really put himself out.

The Sandwich Harbour tour will definitely remain one of our best memories. The guide (Ernst) was extremely competent (he seems to know every single bird in the region) and gave us a lot of explanations (historical background, econocmic and environmental issues, etc.). He really likes showing his clients around, we appreciated his enthusiasm. Great lunch, too (a full homemade meal which was delicious).

Our stay at Mundulea was the 'jewel in the crown' of our wonderful stay in Namibia. It is hard to find words that do full justice to the truly unique experience of spending time there with Bruno Nebe whose deep and wide-ranging knowledge of so many aspects of Namibian culture and every aspect of wildlife preservation and conservation was astonishing. The newly built camp has a wonderfully rustic charm in complete harmony with its beautiful surroundings and lacked for nothing in necessary facilities. Particulary impressive was the environmentally sustainable showers whiich Bruno had constructed using former gas cylinders which enabled the shower water to be heated by burning wood 'harvested' from scrub clearance. We were particularly fortunate that we were the sole guests at the camp during our stay so had lot of quality time to discuss a whole range of subjects. The two walks we did were full of fascinating insights into so many different elements of the behaviour of game in a natural setting and was a massive contrast from Etosha where the game have become immune to the presence of humans. Relatively close encounters with kudu, a family of warthogs and wild cattle were electrifying. Breakfast and evening meals were a delight with excellent and interesting meals cooked over a wood fire. Sundowners with our host at a hide overlooking a waterhole were also a delight. Our only regret was that our stay had to come to an end but, hopefully we will get to return one day.

Dear Kate and Bruno,

We have been slowly settling back into life in Montana, but also trying to keep our Namibian experience fresh in our minds. The word "Bruno" is said at least once a day by one of us in reference to one thing or another, and I have noticed that when our friends ask the kids about their African memories, their answers include, without fail, a recollection from our time with you. Be it armoured crickets or termites (Henry is still concerned about the one balloonish fellow who is relegated to spitting water all day), the newborn giraffe, the Southern Cross, or "Bruno tickling us when we honked his horn," they remember all of it fondly. I appreciate you sharing your insight and wisdom about the animals, the land and the culture with me.
But most of all, thank you a million times over for taking a risk and saying yes to allowing Ben and me and our two young children on such a wonderful adventure.

I don't know how to describe the wonderful time we had a Mundulea. We went expecting basic camping facilities; & how we were we surprised! We did not expect such luxury - some of the furniture was built by Bruno. Take note of the chandelier over the dining table!

We had hot water for the shower (no bucket shower here), if taken during daylight hours; totally unexpected. Bruno has such imagination to have built this camp.

The walking was wonderful & it was such a change to see the animals from on foot rather than in a vehicle. Bruno's knowledge of the area is vast. It amazed me how he finds his way around.

The food cooked over the open fire was excellent with lots of it.

We would not hesitate to return - only next time, if going at this time of year, I think we would take hot water bottles & thermals; it got very cold in the night.

Dear Bruno and Kate,

Unfortunately for us, we never made it to your wonderful looking and sounding reserve. We did, however, have a magical camping trip through Damaraland with Ernst, and wished to give you some of our feedback.

Ernst Ritter was the most brilliant guide and became a great friend to us.

Due to the Christmas break, we had to take our trip with him as soon as we arrived in Namibia, between 19th and 22nd December. He did a quite Herculean amount of driving to drop us off at Etosha prior to haring back to SWakop and on to his farm for Christmas, picking up some bees on the way.

We knew it was likely to be the highlight and would have wished to have kept it till last. Never mind, it really was the highlight and has remained it. We learnt so much of the country, its history and geology as well as its people, flora and fauna. We enjoyed looking at the "little things" as Ernst
kept encouraging us to do. The boys loved the beetles, Agamas and lizards (including the feeling of holding a dung beetle in the palm of your closed hand), we all enjoyed the immense variety of birds, I was constantly amazed at the colours in the desert landscape and the plants that managed to grow
there.

We had a great adventure with elephants visiting our tents, including at 3am on 22nd December. The bull (is it Voortrekker?) most definitely "in must" and highly excited by our two little tents and the landrover. We let them be and they left us alone. We did not take any photographs either, but just enjoyed the privilege of being in such company and have some spectacular memories. Just what we had hoped for our sons' first introduction into Africa.

Ernst also guided us on our day trip to SAndwich Harbour on 29th December. Again, plenty of birdwatching, lots of history, and a bit of dune-driving made it a good day for all.

Do thank Ernst from us. We shall be writing to him separately as well, possibly enclosing a book on card games to teach him the proper rules of Canasta!

With kind regards,
Robert, Johanna, William and Richard Stonehewer-Smith

Hi Ernst,

Our family was on your Sandwich Harbour tour back in July. I've been meaning to send you a note for some time and just got too busy. We all agree that the amazing Namibian landscape was one of the top highlights of our 9 weeks in southern Africa. Walking along the coastal dunes at Sandwich Harbour was an unforgettable experience! Our son Alex often talks about the fun he had in the dunes- walking, driving and especially listening to the sand. I think he also ate more than his fair share of that yummy lasagne. Thank you so much for making it such a great day!

I just received the following great feedback from these guests and wanted to pass it on.
They rated overall experience: EXCELLENT: “Worthwhile trip. Due to tidal conditions, our 4x4 couldn't get that close to the harbour, so we walked along the beach for quite some time each way. As keen walkers, this was great, and we got to see a whale which we wouldn't have done had we been driving. We were caught short by the tide on the way back, so played 'dodge the waves' by jumping onto the dunes. Lunch was much appreciated after our long walk, and was tasty to boot! “

Hallo Ernst,

Dear Kate and Bruno,

I would first like to congratulate you on your ten year anniversary of leading tours in Namibia. I can certainly understand why you are considered to be at the top of the eco-tourism pile!

Thank you, Kate for all your kindness and encouragement when I was making the reservations. As I said to Ernst in an email---I wondered how a company who didn't know us and a guide we hadn't met could do such an exceptional job of fulfilling all those dreams you have when you are thinking of making such a trip. Needless to say, we had an unforgettable 8 days! The knowledge and passion for the geology, flora and fauna of our ever patient guide were so outstanding. I can't think of anything more that we could have asked for -----

The fact that we were in an area that seemed to have no-one else around; to see such changes and beauty around each corner; the herds of springbok in the tall yellow grasses, beautiful Mountain Zebra and then to sleep under the sky filled with so many stars after a delicious dinner ---- - fabulous! Climbing the dunes as the sun comes up will stick with me as a wonderful memory.

Thank you again, Kate. I hope that we will be able to make another tour with Turnstone in the future.

Kind regards,

Liz Bulkley

Hello Kate,

Please thank Ernst for memories of our Nambian trip that will last all of us a lifetime - including our children with whom my husband and I had the absolute pleasure of sharing my birth country in the care of your very special tour guide.

Ernst really is remarkable - his wide and varied skill set as well as his obvious comfort, love and knowledge of the harsh & remote places, where he knows the most off the beaten dramatic places to enhance the solitude and beauty of the land - even in Soussusvlei which has become a tourist destination.
The dune experience was a real highlight - even for our son who under normal circumstances doesn't like sand.

Thank you too Kate, for your consideration of our dietary needs - the kabeljou was an unexpected delicacy and the farm made boerewors provided by Ernst was much appreciated too.
The bedding was very comfortably set up ( thank you) and our nights were adventurous.

The landscape still haunts me with its beauty and the off the beaten track places Ernst took us to. His energy, caring, knowledge and sensitivity to our different personalities and needs made our trip very special.

Thank you,

Grace

Dear Ernst

I hope this has finally reached you. We have tried e mail with and without photographs from our home pc but nothing gets through so this is my work address.

Here in the UK it is a mild winter but looking out over the London skyline it seems a long way from our camping trip with you in Damaraland. It was definitely the highlight of the trip, the beauty of the place, the solitude, the elephants and we enjoyed your company!

Hope all is well with you and your family.

We just want to say thank you for a most wonderful day we spent visiting Sandwich Harbour two weeks ago, on Friday 16th November.
Ernest (apologies if the spelling is wrong) was a wonderful guide and it was a most magical day - one of the highlights of our trip to Namibia.
The lunch was fantastic too - quite delicious - we only wish we could have eaten more.

With very best wishes

Just a few words of thanks for a wonderful and exhillerating tour, very ably led by Ernst Ritter, to Sandwich Harbour on the 20th. It turned out to be one of the highlihts of our extensive tour through Namibia and the Kalahari. Our Swiss friends, pretty seasoned world travellers, were most impressed. The oohs and ahs expressed our surprise and delight when Ernst laid the table for a superb lunch amongst the dunes!
You do have a world-class product which I will recommend whenever possible.

Just a note to say thank you so very much for the fantastic trip to Mundulea. It was a highlight of our trip. The project at Mundulea is an excellent, and fascinating, one - I haven't learnt so much in a very long time. I will try to email some photos if I work out the technology needed!

Thank you also for the delicious food - I shall be trying to repeat your

Please could you keep us posted on Mundulea as we certainly hope to come

Please relay this message to Ernest, our guide for 12 Sept. Tour.

Ernst, your tour was truly one of the highlights of our entire trip. We returned on Thursday and I know it will take a couple of weeks to process all of our adventures but when talking with people about our trip one of the first things I describe in our tour of Sandwich Harbour with you. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and infectious enthusiasm with us. The lunch was fantastic also...such a presentation. I did ask about the flamingos returning to the Makgadikgadi Pans and YES, they said they did when the rains come. I hope there will be more rain this year. We did see many beautiful birds and animals. A trip of a lifetime. Thanks for your part in making it so.

This is a very belated thank you to your company and your guide Ernst, who took us to Sandwich Harbour for the day on 2 August 2007. We spent three weeks in Namibia and this day was one of our high spots. Ernst was such a wonderful host and so full of knowledge in all respects - bird life, plant life, animals, insects, reptiles, geology, etc. From the moment we got into the jeep he was a joy to have as a guide.

We were a party of five (the Hopes family), myself Jenny and my husband Richard and our three children Sam (18), Matthew (17) and Amy (12). Ernst immediately put us at our ease and we all felt comfortable asking questions and we were always given a good explanation to our questions whatever they might have been. He was so knowledgeable, always ready to offer some interesting piece of information and stop and point out interesting things whether it be to do with the landscape/geology or the wildlife/birdlife/plantlife. We all had such a great day and it is always a bonus when the children feel as much part of the activity as the adults because the guide takes the trouble to talk to them and include them and do things that they appreciate and enjoy as well. The trip over the dunes was great and all the stops along the way to look at the birds, plants, insects and the sand dunes/formations, etc were so interesting. Ernst was such a mine of information.

The lunch was a super spread and very enjoyable too. It was so nice to have such an interesting and enjoyable trip, with a perfect host and who was good company too. Ernst was also able to advise us on a good place to sand board, although unfortunately we ran out of time the next day to do this as we had to get a part for our hire car before we moved on towards Etosha on the following day.

Thank you again for such a good day and please pass on our thanks, compliments and best wishes to Ernst.

Kate and Bruno hello,

Just back in Rome after our wonderful trip in Namibia of which the day tour to Sandwich harbor will remain an highlight. We where impressed by the beauty of the area and the delicate balances that threaten its survival. We would like in particular to say a warm hello to our guide Ernst. He is one of those rare people that you meet as strangers but leave as friends after feeling how much he really cares for his environment and the passion he has to communicate. Communicating so well implies not only being so knowledgeable but also taking a real interest in the people you talk to and the desire to involve them in your visions.

Take care,

Just a short note on behalf of my friends and myself to say thanks for a wonderful day out at Sandwich Harbour.

Ernest was on time and full of information about the environment and the problems facing Walvis Bay and its RAMSAR designations.

Personally I saw some wonderful bird species and his depth of knowledge on all thing ecological were really something to be admired. I think I could have spent a week out there and still be having fun. I also have to thank him for scaring the death out of me on the dunes - he knows what I mean!! Its an experience I shall never forget and I have the photographs to help pass on my wonderful day to others.
I must admit , when I booked the tour I was being a bit selfish , in that I was the only one in our group who was interested in birds and increasing my "tick list". However on returning to the hotel I was very relieved to find that my friends also thoroughly enjoyed themselves also.
Congratulations to the chef also for preparing a wonderful meal.

Please pass on our heartfelt thanks to Ernest - as I know he is a technophobe and who can blame him when he has such a wonderful job!

Anyway thanks once again
Best wishes

Dear Kate,
I am finally getting around to contacting you for a number of reasons following our tour in July.
Firstly, we asked our guide Ernest if we could swap our Namib Desert tour for the Sandwich Harbour tour in the end. I hope that we didn’t get him into trouble for being so obliging.

Secondly, the three of us (my mother, my boyfriend and I) had a wonderful time. It was clear that Ernest was very passionate about the things he taught us about, and he passed that passion onto us. We have some very fond memories of our day with him. Please pass on our repeated thanks.

With thanks to you also for running such excellent tours. We hope to return some day to experience more of your fascinating country’s wonders. All the best.
Yours sincerely,

I just wanted to say a big thank you to both of you, Kate for your sensible advice about how the children would cope with the trip and for the lunch (was it your fabulous cooking?) and Bruno for the care you took of myself and particularly the children on the tour (23rd July - Bruno will probably remember rescuing the children from the rising tide). If you ask the children now, months later, which was their favourite bit of their Namibian adventure, they will both independently tell you that it was the trip to Sandwich Harbour. In a holiday of so many memorable and new experiences for them, I think that just about says it all. Keep up the good work. With kind regards

There is very little I shall forget, but perhaps the most abiding memories will be coming round the corner to find the desert elephants you and Douw had tracked for over an hour through the incomparable Damaraland country; sitting with you in the shamaan’s cave by the bushman engravings; those two majestic lions marking out their territory by the water-hole; that first black rhinoceros appearing as if to order as we drove by; and the richness and colour of so many of the birds. Gastronomically and for sheer style the picnic on the dunes above Sandwich Bay stands out alone – I would return for Kate’s apple pie alone!

Dear Bruno

It is not often that I get pleasure from admitting I was wrong, but that was certainly the case after our 4 day trip to Damaraland. To think I argued long and hard against spending quite so much money on four days in the outback in tents and ended up coming home from 3 weeks in Namibia claiming it was the best part, even though for the first two days I was dying from a foul cold!!, and we never even saw the tents!! Iam sure we were very lucky with our guide!! and other trips would not have been quite so packed with information, excellent food and wonderful surroundings ... very many thanks from all three of us, for a fabulous 4 days when we all learnt lots, as well as seeing Namibia at its best with a guide who obviously loved his country.

Yours sincerely

Dear Bruno & Kate

This is partly by way of a VERY belated thank you for so much help while we were in Swakopmund, and in particular for a day out that proved to be very much the highlight of our trip. Quite simply, unbeatable.

In early June this year, you took my parents and me on a trip to Sandwich
Harbour. It was an excellent trip - one of the highlights of our holiday.

Hi Kate,

Just thought I'd let you know that we really enjoyed the day. Had a great
time and the food was excellent. I'll have to do it again when I get my
parents over.

Thank you

Tracey
